I have had a huge fascination with mermaids for as long as I could remember. I don’t know exactly what draws me towards them but they are such wonderful mythological creatures. Back in 1492, Christopher Columbus had thought he had seen a mermaid but later found that is was a manatee. If I am not mistaken I think mermaids even go back further than Christopher Columbus. As early as 1000 BC it was the Goddess of Atargatis, in Syria the northern area of Iraq, that had dove into a lake to take the form of a fish. Atargatis is the fertility goddess if I remember correctly. Ok I had to dig a little deeper here, according to the National Ocean Service, (NOAA), “The belief in mermaids may have arisen at the very dawn of our species. Magical female figures first appear in cave paintings in the late Paleolithic (Stone Age) period some 30,000 years ago, when modern humans gained dominion over the land and, presumably, began to sail the seas.” So I think this goes back even further. I have been doing a lot of research and I have another website, in which it is dedicated to mermaids. You can check that out here. I could go on and on about me talking about mermaids but go check it out. I may need to update it though.
