Discovering that I had melanoma on my shoulder was a frightening and life-changing experience. Melanoma in Situ is a type of skin cancer that can spread quickly if not treated properly. In this article, I will share my journey of dealing with skin cancer and provide tips on how to take proper care of your skin if you have been diagnosed with melanoma.
Finding out I have Melanoma in Situ in My Shoulder
I didn’t even know that I had it in my shoulder. After my daughter getting a wart on her foot I decided to get a skin assessment from the dermatologist that I took her to. I had something on my face that I wanted to get checked for my own peace of mind, little did I know the next few days were going to be life changing. During the skin assessment they looked at every freckle, mole and speck from head to toe. They found three things that were concerning and that needed to be biopsied. A mole on my shoulder, and two spots on my face. The doctor said it would take two weeks before I get the results. Who knew that in nine days I was getting results back. The waiting of going in to see my doctor with the results had me terrified. When she gave me the news that it’s Melanoma in situ (also called stage 0 melanoma. It means there are cancer cells in the top layer of skin (the epidermis)). My heart dropped and my anxiety started. This is just the beginning of this journey. Surgery has been scheduled for August 29.
